What is a philanthropist?

Philanthropy means goodwill to humankind or an effort to promote human welfare. A philanthropist is someone who puts this idea into practice. Many philanthropists contribute money to organizations working to help people or address major issues facing our world. However, more and more philanthropists are giving their time and using their talents and energy to help an organization or movement. GFC is lucky to have partnered with two great youth organizations that work to spread awareness and raise money for our grantee partners.

New Global Citizens

New Global Citizens is mobilizing a generation to take action for global change. New Global Citizens is working to educate a generation of young people about global challenges, directly connect them with grassroots locally led projects around the world, equip them with the skills to take action, and mobilize them to become an instrumental force in ending global poverty on high school campuses across the nation.

This year, the following schools are educating, advocating, and fundraising for The Global Fund for Children’s grassroots partners:

Desert Mountain High School in Arizona has chosen Children of Tien-Shan in Kyrgyzstan, which began as an emergency crisis center for street children and now offers programs for at-risk children from infancy to 18.

Horizon High School in Arizona has chosen MAIS in the Dominican Republic, which works to keep girls and young women out of the commercial sex trade by reintegrating them into school and strengthening their family and community support structures.

Mountain View High School in Arizona has chosen Carolina for Kibera in Kenya, which works to promote youth leadership and ethnic and gender cooperation through sports, young women's empowerment, and community development.

University High School in Arizona has chosen Women Development Association in Cambodia, which works to empower women and girls in the community, while also addressing the issue of boys andyoung men who are at risk of participating in criminal or violent activities.

Shaker High School in New York and Paradise Valley High School in Arizona both chose the Center for Youth Integration in Serbia, which works with street children and orphans, advocating for their rights.

The Mirman School

The Mirman School has been raising funds for The Global Fund for Children since 1999 through its annual read-a-thon. This year, the kids will be reading for the following community-based organizations:

Ruchika Social Services Organization in India, providing classrooms on train platforms for children who live and beg in the train stations

Ethiopia Books in Ethiopia, which creates mobile libraries by having donkeys carry books through towns

Challenging Heights in Ghana, which coordinates awareness-raising activities on child labor and trafficking, as well as policy advocacy.

What Can You Do to Help?

There are many ways in which you can make a difference in the lives of children around the world.

Some young people ask their friends and family to make a donation to the Global Fund for Children instead of giving them a gift for birthdays, holidays, bar or bat mitzvahs, and other occasions.

Some people decide to collect the money they earn for chores or get as gifts or allowance and donate some of it to GFC

Buying a book from The Global Fund for Children is a great way to help. Part of the proceeds from the sales of our books supports our grantee partners around the world. Check out our latest books!

Become part of our online community. You can learn more about our projects and share our work with your friends through our Facebook and Twitter communities.

The best way to help is by making an effort to be a caring, productive citizen of the world! Learn a new language, make friends with someone who comes from a different background than you, volunteer in your community, and always be respectful and tolerant of others.
