2008-2009 Annual Report
2008-2009 Annual Report

We are proud that 86 percent of our budget is directed to program services, helping to advance the dignity of children all over the world. Only 14 percent is directed to fundraising and general administration. This is well below the national average of 25 percent for such expenses.

Charity Navigator

Charity Navigator has awarded us its highest rating of four stars for the fifth consecutive year. We are committed to continuing this high level of financial efficiency and accountability. This exceptional rating indicates that our performance "exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in [our] Cause.”

2008-2009 Annual Report

Last fiscal year, we awarded 488 grants valued at more than $3.28 million to grassroots groups serving vulnerable children and youth around the world. Since 1997, GFC has awarded 2,677 grants valued at close to $16 million. These grants have supported and strengthened 376 community-based organizations in 73 countries.

  • Faith, which celebrates the diversity of religious expression around the world, became our fastest seller ever, boosted by a major sale to Scholastic Book Fairs.
  • We expanded our grantmaking into six new countries—Burundi, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan—allowing us to reach vulnerable children in even more corners of the world.
  • We were able to award two Global Fund for Children/ International Center of Photography Fellowships this year. Jesse Newman traveled to Thailand and Guatemala, photographing grantee partners working in early childhood development as part of our Under-8 Initiative. Tiana Markova-Gold visited our partners involved in the Nike Grassroots Girls Initiative in Brazil and Nigeria.
  • Since 1996, the Books for Kids project has donated more than 85,000 books, with a retail value of more than $1 million, to organizations and programs promoting children’s literacy around the world.
