Kakenya’s Visit

  • By Stephanie deWolfe on October 28th, 2011
  • Category: Blog, Grassroots Girls Initiative, Sub-Saharan Africa

Washington, DC – We were lucky to have Kakenya Ntaiya visit the GFC office to speak about her organization—the Kakenya Center for Excellence, located in Enoosaen, Kenya—and its ongoing work to empower girls by engaging the community in the girls’ success and well-being. Kakenya shed light on how engaging community members, even those who might have supported traditions that oppressed girls, has not only paved the way to success for the girls who attend the center’s Academy for Girls but also gradually shifted community attitudes about girls’ education and female genital cutting practices. By engaging families, village elders, and the girls themselves in conversations and decision making, the organization is fostering sustainable change, from the ground up.

About The Grassroots Girls Initiative

We have partnered with the Nike Foundation since 2006 as one of six organizations that form the foundation’s Grassroots Girls Initiative. Our current grant from the Nike Foundation enables us to support approximately 20 grassroots partners that are working to equip adolescent girls with the resources, tools, and options they need to create better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.
