Tsunami Grants
Phase III: Reconstruction
GFC is committed to supporting long-term reconstruction efforts in tsunami-affected areas. As such, GFC expects to disperse approximately $300,000 over the next two years for support of child-focused tsunami reconstruction activities. Examples of such activities include financial assistance for families who are caring for orphans; counseling for traumatized children; and reconstruction of school buildings. To date, GFC has awarded $200,000 to eleven organizations in Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and Indonesia that are addressing the long-term needs of tsunami-affected children and youth.

as well as offering counseling services for the children.

and caregivers to help them address the psychosocial needs of children.

Mirror Foundation: Tsunami Volunteer Center

Takua Pa district, Thailand
To support the Village Children’s Clubs of Phang Nga Province,
helping young people living in refugee camps and devastated villages
to interact in positive ways through activities such as neighborhood
cleanups, sports, and programs that build skills for adjusting to their
new living environments.
Muhammadiyah ‘Aisyiyah

Aceh, Indonesia
To support educational opportunities for young children through kindergarten
and playgroups, and scholarships to allow twelve- to eighteen-year-old
youth who are orphans or from single-parent families to continue
their schooling.
Protecting Environment and Children Everywhere

Colombo, Sri Lanka
To provide child care, recreational activities, educational support
programs, group therapy sessions, and post-traumatic stress disorder
counseling for children and communities.
Sanghamitra Service Society

Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India
To support the provision of health and education services to the Yanadi
tribal communities, including books, materials, and clothes for children,
as well as health checkups and education, and support for attending
school.
Shilpa Children’s Trust

Colombo, Sri Lanka
To provide financial support, counseling, and school fees for fifty
orphaned children who have been placed in foster families, as well
as administrative costs of the organization’s sponsorship program.
Sunera Foundation

Matara, Sri Lanka
To support the Tsunami Theatre Outreach Project, using drama and performance-art
therapy to address post-tsunami trauma and emotional-health issues
among children and young people living in relief camps.
Women Lawyers’ Association
$16,000
Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi provinces, Thailand
To support efforts to protect the rights of tsunami victims, addressing
legal issues such as adoption, property rights for orphans, and commercial
sex trafficking.
