Kathmandu, Nepal – Spending time with Indira Ranamagar, the director of GFC grantee partner Prisoners Assistance Nepal (PA Nepal) is refreshing. She is constantly advocating for children’s causes wherever she goes and whenever she gets a chance. She founded PA Nepal in 1990 to advocate for prison reforms in Nepal. The organization’s holistic approach incorporates the prisoners’ children, families, and communities.
GFC supports PA Nepal’s daycare center, which allows children between the ages of 1 and 6 who live with their incarcerated mothers to be in a safe environment during the day. The daycare center is located close to the jail, and the children return there in the evening to maintain relationships with their mothers. Indira informed me that PA Nepal has expanded the outreach of the daycare center to include children from nearby communities as well.
Over the years, children from PA Nepal have grown into responsible adults, and Indira shared the stories of their success with pride. One of her girls found her life partner and is settled happily. Another found suitable employment. And five of the children currently served by PA Nepal earned the best grades in their class.
