Ixtapa, Mexico – Sharing thoughts on the leadership and significance of a strong management team with the 50 Cordes fellows, an amazing group of young social entrepreneurs, was one of the highlights for me on Sunday at the Opportunity Collaboration, an unconventional retreat focusing on poverty alleviation.
My co-panelists were Sakena Yacoobi, founder of the Afghan Institute of Learning, and Martin Burt, founder of Teach a Man to Fish. Ron Cordes, president of the Cordes Family Foundation, moderated the panel and opened it with inspiring and valuable suggestions. Sakena, who has a long history of great partnership with GFC, emphasized passion, loyalty, and commitment to the cause as some of the integral values to look for while searching for team members. The Cordes fellows are participating in a special four-course program at the Opportunity Collaboration, and their enthusiasm to connect, learn, and share their expertise and ideas was infectious.
An interesting mix of emerging leaders and established leaders; nonprofit organizations, corporations, and hybrid for-profit and nonprofit models; funders, funding seekers, and consultants; and policy advocates and program practitioners, along with thematic and regional diversity, creates a great environment for discussions on diverse experiences, thoughts, and approaches. The Opportunity Collaboration sure is a place to be!
