New York, NY – On a crisp fall afternoon, overlooking the flags of many nations flapping in the wind, children’s book creators, children, and educators gathered in a cozy room at the United Nations Plaza to celebrate. It was October 15, 2010, the 150th birthday of Jane Addams and the occasion of the 2010 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award ceremony.
Jeanette Winter, author-illustrator of Nasreen’s Secret School, a Global Fund for Children book, is the winner of the 2010 award in the books for younger children category. The award is named after the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, an undaunted social pioneer (1860–1935) who made possible reforms and legislation that have had a lasting impact on the lives of children. Given by the Jane Addams Peace Association (the educational arm of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom), the award recognizes excellent children’s books that “invite young readers to think deeply about peace, social justice and world community, past and present.”
Nasreen’s Secret School is based on the true story of a girl in Afghanistan who finds a new lease on life through education during the dark days of Taliban rule. Jeanette Winter developed the book in collaboration with The Global Fund for Children and Simon & Schuster. Nasreen’s Secret School is a tribute to the many courageous women and girls in Afghanistan who, risking their personal safety, persevere in learning and saying Yes to life!
